The Imposter game is a social deduction word game: everyone gets the same secret word except one player, the imposter, who has to bluff. The best Imposter game words are specific enough to give clues about but broad enough that the imposter can fake it, like Pizza, Beach, or Hospital. Below are 200+ Imposter game words by category and difficulty, plus rules and strategies.

How to play the Imposter game

Players: 4–12 · Time: 3–5 minutes per round · Needs: one phone or paper slips

  1. Pick a category and a secret word.
  2. Every player privately sees the word, except the imposter, who only learns they're the imposter (optionally, they see the category).
  3. Going around the circle, each player says one word related to the secret word.
  4. After one or two rounds of clues, everyone discusses and votes for who they think the imposter is.
  5. If the group votes out the imposter, the group wins. If they vote out an innocent player, the imposter wins.
  6. Bonus: If caught, the imposter gets one chance to guess the secret word and steal the win.

No slips needed: Tadado's Imposter mode assigns roles and secret words as you pass the phone, so nobody can peek.

How to win the Imposter game

If you know the word:

  • Give clues specific enough to prove you know it, but not so obvious that the imposter can guess it.
  • Watch for vague clues like "fun" or "big." They are a classic imposter move.
  • Notice who hesitates or copies the vibe of the previous clue.

If you are the imposter:

  • Go later in the round when possible, so you have heard more clues.
  • Pick a word that fits several earlier clues at once.
  • Do not stay silent in the vote. Accuse someone confidently.
  • Keep track of the clues: if you are caught, you may still win by guessing the secret word.

Imposter game FAQ

What is the Imposter word game?

It is a social deduction party game where all players share a secret word except one imposter. Players give one-word clues and vote to find who is bluffing.

What are good words for the Imposter game?

The best words are common and concrete, with many possible clues: Pizza, Beach, Hospital, Penguin, Wedding, or Volcano. Avoid words that are too niche or have only one obvious clue.

How many players do you need for Imposter?

At least 4 players. It is most fun with 5–10. For groups of 8 or more, try adding a second imposter.

Is the Imposter game the same as Spyfall or Among Us?

It is similar in spirit: a hidden player has to blend in while others try to find them. Imposter is simpler, though: just a word, one-word clues, and a vote.

Is there an app for the Imposter game?

Yes. Tadado has a built-in Imposter mode that deals roles and secret words on one phone. It is free, ad-free, and works offline on iOS and Android, alongside Forbidden Words and Heads Up.
